When you regularly feel confused, overwhelmed, disconnected-from-self, or a bit too crazy after spending time with the same person – consider the idea that it’s not you – maybe, just maybe – it’s them. (Search terms: cognitive dissonance and double-binds). Maybe said person is doing it on purpose, maybe she’s not. Maybe he’s got mental illness, maybe he doesn’t. Really, who cares?
What I know for sure is that if you don’t feel connected with yourself, you’re going to make less-than-healthy decisions. It helps to get real with what’s most important to you. What I learned about myself is that at the core of my being I deeply care and I love caring deeply.
I believe that many of you who read my blog also value deeply caring and caring deeply. The danger (and you already know this) is that caring deeply about others can put you at risk of putting you at odds with yourself (codependency, eh?). And, you know this, too: self-betrayal is a surefire way to kill your joy.
The good news is that YOU have a choice. Yes, it can be difficult to see sometimes, especially if you deeply care about the other person. But YOU really do have a choice.
Here are some affirmations that can help you stay strong, stay true, stay connected with who you really are, no matter what, no matter when, no matter where.
I am on my side.
(Stronger: I am always on my side.)
I choose me.
(Stronger: I love choosing me!)
I am learning to be my very best cheerleader, my greatest supporter and my strongest advocate.
You have a right to be true to you. Your freedom and joy depend on it. Here’s another affirmation for you:
Integrity with the core of my being is self-connection at its best.
If someone tries to knock you away from that… stay strong! A few days ago, I created a couple of posters for you. I invite you to print them out and read them every day.
You are so very worth it!
Shine your light, baby! Let it shine!!
